Even the best of products demand maintenance, especially if they are exposed to the nature.
Rain water, sunlight, snow, dust, humidity and other such elements may take away years from the lifespan of your doors and windows, unless these issues addressed with proper care.
Although you can always hire professional help for serious maintenance needs, you can always go the DIY way to address the regular maintenance demanded by your doors and windows.
Window Maintenance Tips
Off-the-shelf window cleaning solutions can work well, but not if you are looking for that spotless clarity. However, there is a way to make sure your windows and doors keep looking as good as new for years to come.
Here is what you need to do to get that unblemished cleaning.
- Rubber gloves
- Two buckets or one bucket with two wells
- Sudsy ammonia cleaner
- White vinegar
- Rubbing alcohol
- Several clean, dry rags
- Coffee filters
- A squeegee
- A ladder, if necessary
- Read manufacturer’s instructions on all cleaning agents and tools.
- Be extremely careful when using ladders and cleaning open windows.
- Do not stand on furniture; use a ladder, scaffolding or step stool.
- Wear rubber cloves throughout the cleaning process.
- Never leave a window unattended, especially if kids are around.
All Set? Follow these simple steps!
Fill the buckets with 1 to 2 gallons hot water. Make sure the temperature isn’t too high for your gloved hands. Use extreme caution when handling hot water in order to avoid burns.
Add one cup each of ammonia and vinegar to one of the buckets. In the other, add two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol; this will help water to evaporate quickly and give your windows that dazzling sparkle.
Remove bugs, stickers and other marks using a synthetic scraping tool. Here, it is advisable to avoid straight-edge metal blades as they can potentially damage the surface of the window.
Wipe the entire surface of the window or door you need to clean using the ammonia solution and a dry rag. Start at the top, making your way to all the corners, ending at the bottom.
Rinse the window using the rubbing alcohol solution. Immediately squeegee any remaining solution. Press firmly in a vertical motion and dry the squeegee after each stroke. Repeat using clean water.
Use a dry rag to wipe the corners and sill of the window. If lint is a problem, you can touch up these specific areas using coffee filters as they are lint free.
